Travel Notes: Adventures in Western Australia with Vivian Kim

By Vivian Kim | Writer, Photographer & Surfer

Vivian Kim is a photographer who is passionate about capturing the beauty of life on the run. Although she is based in Los Angeles, she is often somewhere else and loves to surf, eat, explore, and hang out with friends all over the world. She sees small, simple moments as the most valuable and seeks to portray this perspective in all of her images. Vivian loves and prefers film photography (over digital) because of the timelessness in the images and the intention behind each shot. She recently graduated from Pepperdine University in Malibu and is always seeking out ways to bring novelty and excitement into her day-to-day life.

I recently went to visit my friends in Western Australia. All of my California friends wondered why in the heck I was going to Perth (they say there’s nothing in Perth) instead of the other side of Australia, with Melbourne, Sydney, etc. Anyway, all of this opposition made me even more excited to go. I honestly had not researched much about Australia and I’m ashamed to admit that I didn’t even realize how huge it was until a few weeks before I left. I went with an open mind, lots of curiosity, and no expectations—except to have a ton of fun. During my two weeks there, my friends and I road-tripped down south to Margaret River. I did get in the water at some point, but it was really high tide and the waves weren’t great. We also took a 20 minute ferry ride from Fremantle to Rottnest Island—a true dream land.

Here are some photos from all of our mini trips and the great times between them:
